Atterbury Complete Opal/Amethyst Cut-to Clear banquet OIL LAMP
This is one of the premier styles of oil lamps popular with rich folk in the period during and following the Civil War. The font is made of two layers of fused glass (known as cased glass). After firing a craftsman used a grinding wheel to cut away the top Opal layer to reveal small amethyst windows on the lower portion of the pear-shaped font. The artisan, using a grinder/etcher instrument deeply ground the floral pattern, leaving a frosted amethyst pattern at the top and wide section of the font. Unlike most so-called cut-to-clear banquet lamps made, this lamp's lower layer is amethyst rather than clear revealing an appealing translucent underlayer after cutting.

A brass burner collar and connector were attached (the screw socket brass connector was unique to Atterbury Glass Co. and patented by them in 1872); all connected to the patented Atterbury Octagon opal glass base.

The chimney is a replacement. The burner is the original #1 size brass burner. The wick raiser wheel has embossed:"Pat. APR 10 1877"

The lamp without chips or cracks, in perfect working order. The only imperfection I see is some small blisters/wrinkles in the otherwise prefect brass burner collar. The accompanying photographs reveal its excellent condition. Similar lamps can be seen in Thuro’s Vol. 2 on pages 48 to 65. The patented Octagonal base can be seen in Vol. 1 on pages 130, 142 & 143. She states that the market value ranges between $900 and $2,300 without a burner & chimney. I am offering it at far below this range, not because of any shortcoming simply because I would like this lamp to go to someone (like myself) who could never otherwise afford it.

I charge only the actual shipping cost, by the method of your preference, to any destination worldwide.
