This is a geniune Victorian oil lamp made in the 1872 period. The base is a well-cast iron with solid brass connectors attaching to the hand blown glass font that is embossed and frosted. It is topped with a solid brass apron collar. The top surface of the font has a "drip gutter" to catch any kerosene spilled during filling. That gutter is embossed with two statements: "PATENTED SEPT 29 1868" and "PATENTED JULY 1872." " It is in complete working condition with a replacement solid brass #2 burner and shade holder, wick, chimney and frosted hand cut bowl shade, with hand cut top edge.

This handsome parlor lamp has survived almost unscathed from the Civil War era (there is some rust on the bottom of the iron base). I rented this lamp for use in Novmeber 2009 as an authentic Victorian scene prop for the Robert Redford movie production of "The Conspirator." This film depicts the role of Mary Surrat, one of those who planned the assassination of Lincoln. She was the first woman executed in the U.S.

Similar lamps are pictured in the Catherine Thuro Vol 1, 2 & 3., valued at $150-$200, without the burner, chimney, and shade in 2001. This type of oil lamp was purchased by upper middle class homeowners of the time and displayed prominently during in their parlors - thus the name parlor lamp.
